For this series of posts, we challenged ourselves to write an obscure-sounding poem with no intended meaning in mind. Then we all took turns analyzing each other’s poetry, to see if we could extract some meaning after the fact. It turns out, writing a truly meaningless poem is harder than it sounds!

Five Doves
By Stephen Sokol
Whence do the five doves come?
When all is said and all is done,
Who then can truly say,
I alone have overcome.
And passing on the night-bird’s way,
Who can truly bear the sun?
Nick’s Analysis:
The environmental protection agencies of 5 great world powers are symbolized here by 5 doves. However this poem seems to be a call for vigilante action in response to their ineffectiveness at preventing global warming. Acting in the shadows, one alone can bear the power of the scorching sun. God save us all!
Sarah’s Analysis:
The five doves represent the four horsemen of the apocalypse, and the fifth is your soul... This poem is a truly beautiful and epic tale of the only pure man, the only one who survives the end of the world... Who then discovers he is left in a burning wasteland, and though he can survive... Does he want to?
